Data Privacy: What it means for you

What is data privacy?

Data privacy is the protection of our digital data. Everyone takes photos nowadays. We listen to music and browse the internet. Everything that we do, that showcases our preferences and interests, is our data. Our videos, audio, and photographs also fall under the umbrella of data. Corporations use this data to promote their products and use effective marketing schemes. Hackers breach our privacy to perform scams and identity theft. Data privacy recently became a hot topic when social media became popular. The data breaches and scandals over the misuse of personal data also made data privacy more important.

VoIP and your data

As VoIP usage grows on the Internet, so do concerns about privacy. Is VoIP secure? This is one of the most common question business owners have about a VoIP phone system. After over 20 years of use in the market, VoIP technology has evolved and is very secure. How? Let’s break it down.

Traditional analog phones make and receive calls through a network of copper wires and fiber optic cables. In other words, there’s a physical connection between the caller and the recipient.

VoIP transmits data over the Internet, making digital calls via packet switching. In packet switching, voice data is broken up into smaller packets, which are then sent over the Internet connection to the receiving end of the line. There, they reconnect and successfully transmit voice data.

This end-to-end encryption technology is the same that governments use to protect classified information. With VoIP calls, encryption of the entire call requires that the other user also is on the network. This results in an incredibly secure phone connection.
