What is Porting?

Porting a telephone number refers to the process of transferring or moving a phone number from one telecommunications provider to another.

For example, if you decide to switch from one phone carrier to another, you may want to keep your current phone number instead of getting a new one. In this case, you would initiate a porting request with your new carrier, who would then work with your old carrier to transfer your phone number to the new service.

What is the process?

The process of porting a phone number typically takes a few days to complete. There may be some downtime during the transition period. It's important to ensure that you provide accurate and complete information to both carriers to ensure a smooth and successful porting process.

What is different with Sonictel?

We do the porting process for you, making it quick and easy. There is also NO downtime during the process. We time it out so your new phone system is set up before the port and we will be on-site at your location to help with any issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Some services are better suited to an ethernet connection. For example, credit card processing machines can work over the internet saving you the cost of a phone line. Other services such as alarms use transmission protocols that do not work well with VoIP.

  • The preferred method of faxing is now electronic fax. However, we can support traditional fax through your current fax machine.

  • No. Porting is a "pull" process. Once we have all the paperwork, we handle all of the porting for you.

  • We suggest waiting 48 hours after your port date before contacting the losing carrier to cancel the specific numbers that were ported.
